BIO
A pop artist for the 21st Century, Melbourne-based artist Coady responds to the pulse of contemporary culture and its addiction to consumption and youth.
Working across sculpture, installation, video, performance and painting, Coady’s interdisciplinary practice questions our perceptions of self and the precariousness of our modern mindframe. Coady’s works are humorous and playful, yet also absurdist, drawing on familiar imagery and subverting their prosaicness through disfigurement and displacement.
Coady experiments with form and scale in the context of acrylic works and painting to explore questions socio-physiological anxieties. Central to Coady’s practice is the exploration of mood and issues of mental health and body image. The work questions issues such as our reliance on medication and the complexities of understanding ourselves in realtime, removed from the inescapable digital lens we view ourselves through. The refracting of reality through the digital lens inextricably positions us in the digital milieu of idealised constructs of perfection.
Coady’s large scale sculptural pill works, along with text base works and paintings are not prescriptive – they don’t provide a solution to the question of our relationship to our body image and the complexities our contemporary digital social suffocation. Rather, they are subversive in their the perfection – the perfect pill can’t create the perfect person. They are representative of the question itself – concerned with their own aesthetics and the new developments in fabrication technology.
Recent solo presentations include ART SUCKS (2018), Juddy Roller Gallery, SELF REVELATORY SCHEMATICS (2017), SEVENTH Gallery, and Sydney Contemporary 2018 with Lisa Fehily Gallery. Coady has also been a finalist in the Brisbane Art Prize, Sculpture by the Sea and the Portia Geach Memorial Award.
Her work is held in private collections in Australia, United Kingdom and Singapore.
